The Role of Art in the Community

After seeing the art that you saw on Monday, both the
public art and the art in galleries, what role do you
feel art plays in our community? How might the
community be different WITHOUT the art that we saw?

See you in May!

Coming from a performing and visual arts magnet school, I may be more appreciative of the role that art plays in defining a community. San Jose, most people would expect to be a very technological city as i is the heart of Silicon Valley. But as we saw there is more to San Jose than mere computers and business. The art that surrounds our city is a reminder of not only our eclectic mix of creativity but also the personality of San Jose. In the museums and street art we visited, it was very apparent that many different opinions, personalities and styles exist in San Jose. Art not only tells a story of the artist (such as the ghoulish looking sculptures at A.D.) but also of our past, present and future. It's the art in San Jose that will live forever, when we ourselves can no longer tell the stories.

Art has the ability to unite our community. The work that MACLA has done in nearby neighborhoods proves this. Also, the galleries bring the community together the first Friday of each month when they show their new featured artists. And, personally, I think art makes San Jose way more awesome. It’s fun to walk by an empty store and see art work shown by the phantom gallery. Art just makes things more joyful and more interesting.
